Crocheted doughnuts / donuts - easy phototutorial

Finnish version here / Linkki suomenkieliseen ohjeeseen: https://ominkapalin.blogspot.com/2022/03/virkatut-donitsit-helppo-kuvallinen-ohje.html

This is my first ever pattern release, so any feedback is appreciated! I'm not a pro photographer or fluent in English, so don't be too harsh please x) If you make these, I'd be so pleased if you shared your project in Ravelry or tagged it on Instagram/Facebook @ominkapalinonneen. Happy crocheting!

The doughnut is approx. 1x3in in size.

Pattern is written with US crochet terminology, but simply enough, as an UK crocheter you just need to make a double crochet when the pattern tells you to make a single crochet.

Supplies needed

  • 2,5-3mm crochet hook
  • stitch marker (safety pin is fine)
  • tapestry needle (large, blunt needle)
  • polyester filling

Yarn

Schachenmayr Catania 100% mercerised cotton, 50g = 125m/137yds. Alternatively any sport weight cotton yarn, such as Safran by Drops design.
One doughnut takes approximately 10g of Catania yarn
in "dough" shade 179, and 10g colour of your choice for the "glaze", plus different colours of scrap yarn for the decorations (optional)

Pink:
pink 222, sprinkles yellow 280, light blue 173, coral 256, light green 392, chocolate stripes brown 157
Mint:
mint 385, yellow 280, pink 222, dark chocolate stripes 162
Milk chocolate:
brown 157, sprinkles lilac 226, pink 222, light blue 173, dark chocolate stripes 162

Size & gauge

Doughnut measures 3 inches wide and 1 inch high. Crochet gauge is 24scs x 24rnds = 4 inches in single crochet.

Abbreviation

ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet (US), in UK terms "double crochet"
st = stitch
rnd = round

Instructions

  1. rnd Crochet 18 chs using colour 179 (doughnut dough colour), join with a slip stitch to form a loop.

  2. rnd Crochet in a spiral 18 scs and mark the first stitch.

  3. rnd Crochet *2st, 2st to the same stitch*, repeat ** 6 times in total (=24st)

  4. rnd Crochet *3st, 2st to the same st*, repeat ** 6 times in total (=30st)

  5. rnd Crochet *4st, 2st to the same st*, repeat ** 6 times in total (=36st)

  6. rnd Crochet *5st, 2st to the same st*, repeat ** 6 times in total (=42st)

  7. rnd Crochet *6st, 2st to the same st*, repeat ** 6 times in total (=48st)

  8. rnd Crochet *7st, 2st to the same st*, repeat ** 6 times in total (=52st)

  9. rnd Crochet *8st, 2st to the same st*, repeat ** 6 times in total (=58st)

  10.  - 12. rnd Crochet 3 rnds without increases. Fasten off with a slip stitch, weave in ends.

Crochet 18 scs to the loop that you began with using the glaze colour yarn, and continue crocheting using the same pattern as before with the dough piece.

 The top and bottom pieces should be of the same size, check to make sure by putting them on top of each other. Fasten off with a slip stitch, and leave a long tail (20in or so) for sewing.

If you want to decorate the doughnut with sprinkles or chocolate stripes, it's the easiest to do at this point. Sprinkles are made with two running stitches on top of each other, and chocolate stripes with chain stitches (using a needle).

Using the glaze colour yarn tail, sew the edges together.

Before the seam is complete, fill the doughnut with polyester filling. Use small pieces and fill the doughnut quite tightly. Finish the seam, secure with a knot and sew the yarn tail inside.

Make a cup of coffee and enjoy your doughnut!
